Kilkenny golfer, Gary Murphy is set to go back to tour school rather than rely on sponsor invitations into tournaments.
This outcome follows the Australian Masters where he finished in a tie for 36 place and was the only Irish player on the European Tour not to retain his card for 2010. World number 1, Tiger Woods finished ahead in the tournament who carded a final round 68 to finish 14 under par to win, with Greg Chalmers finishing behind him with 12 under par.
Murphy started the tournament 12 spots outside the top 115 players on the Race to Dubai moneylist who will all keep their tickets for 2010.
Gary Murphy started out in the golfing scene as a caddy when he was 11 years old and was also a keen soccer player, having trials for Ireland’s under 13 and under 15 teams. However, he decided to concentrate more on golf and went on to win the Irish Amateur Closed Championship in 1992. He turned professional in 1995. He won the Asian Tour qualifying school in 1997, and played two seasons on that tour in addition to competing on the second tier European Challenge Tour, before returning to Europe full time after winning a European Tour card at the 1999 final qualifying school. In 2005, Murphy won the Azores Open in Portugal.
