Garda impersonator pleads guilty

An 18 year-old man admitted impersonating a member of An Garda Síochana at Kilkenny Court this week.

Brian Homan, 20 Newpark Close, Kilkenny pleaded guilty to the offence which took place at Kilkenny Library Car Park on February 9.

Inspector Tony Lonergan told the court that the defendant, accompanied by another man, broke into a car parked outside the library and removed the car radio.

"The owner of the vehicle, who was asleep in the car at the time, was awoken by the men. The defendant then told him that he was Detective Martin Power from Kilkenny Garda Station. When the owner demanded identification, the two men fled the scene," explained the Inspector.

Homan also pleaded guilty to a further charge of taking 80 packets of cigarettes which were hidden in the rear seat of a vehicle parked outside No 14 Rosewood on November 4, 2007.

Judge William Harnett requested that a probation officer’s report be carried out and that the defendant's suitability for community service be asssessed. The case was adjourned until December 9.
