Dicksboro 2-19
John Lockes 2-6
The Minor ‘A’ final between John Lockes and Dicksboro saw the Boro men take the trophy home after a courageous effort by both teams.
In the first half John Lockes looked the dominant team and went into the dressing room a point ahead. However, a series of wides from the Callan lads and a great second half performance by the Boro side meant they were three points ahead when the final whistle blew.
John Lockes got off to a sizzling start with a goal and a point in the opening four minutes. Cahill Byrne sent the ball over the bar and DJ Bergin scored the goal after Dan Mc Cormack took a free and lobbed it into the square.
Martin Gaffney put the ‘Boro on the map with a point from a free, but DJ Bergin responded with a great point after being set up by Ryan O’Dwyer.
However things got stirred up when Martin Gaffney scored a goal from a free 30 yards out from the goaline and then went on to score a further two points. Corner forward Eamon Campion also put a great point over from play after help from his mid-field and half forward team mates.
In the 23 minute Jason Corocoran lobbed a high ball in from a free and DJ Bergin again got the rebounded ball and managed to put it in the back of the net. Both sides put another point each on the scoreboard before half time so that the score at the half time whistle was 2-3 to 1-5.
The second half saw the match become incredibly intense. The Boro’s full and half backs showed great strength and determination. While John Lockes had the skill and the drive to push forward, their poor free taking and their many wides meant their work was not reflected on the scoreboard, especially when compared to Dicksboro who converted most attempts.
Again the Lockes got off to a good start with two points from Shane Bergin and Jason Corcoran in the opening minutes. Martin Gaffney went on to score a point from a free and a fantastic goal after a free from the half back line found its way to the back of the net.
Owen McGrath for the Lockes put a point over from a free 10 minutes later as did Martin Gaffney for Dicksboro. The Lockes, down by a point with five minutes to go, were battling hard to score but nothing went right for them with a series of successive wides. In the last two minutes the Boro’s Martin Gaffney and Cillian Buckley put their side ahead by three points.
Both sides displayed great determination and physical strength in this well matched game. Martin Gaffney showed an ability on the ball that any senior hurler would be happy with and was the chief scorer on the day with an impressive tally of 2-6. Captain David Glynn cleaned up in the full back line, making his line impenetrable. Danny Kenny, a giant among these young men, gave a heroic performance at half back and Jessie Watters also played extremely well throughout the day.
For the Lockes, Alan Bergin was incredible in the half back line and was a force to be reckoned with. Lee Delaney was also impressive throughout the entire match and kept a lot of ball moving in the forward line. Jason Corcoran and Matthew Holohan were both very strong in their position and made life very difficult for their opponents.
