Last week’s All-Ireland Conker Championships held in Freshford saw local woman, Aileen Dooley take the throne as Ireland’s conker champion.
Dooley will have the opportunity to travel to the UK next year to take part in the world championships.
Speaking to The Kilkenny Advertiser,Dooley said: “I still can’t believe I won. It hasn’t sunk in yet at all. I’ve never got past the second round before so it is a complete shock to have won.”
She continued: “It’s a funny thing to have on the CV but I’m very proud to have achieved such a title.”
The championships took place last weekend in Freshford and were held in conjunction with the Freshford Autumn Fest. The town went all out for the occasion and a lot of work was put into the organisation of the three-day event.
Of the weekend, Dooley said: “The whole weekend was a great success. There were flower shows and art exhibitions and some great music to be heard. The weather held up on Sunday which was a great help.”
Dooley, currently living in Dublin, is from Freshford Square. Her brother Eamon also won the title some years ago.
