Bobby Aylward sides against Minister in drink driving debacle

Kilkenny TD Bobby Aylward is refusing to support Minister Noel Dempsey’s plans to reduce the drink driving limit.

During the week Noel Dempsey’s proposal caused a huge backlash from Fianna Fail backbenchers.

Speaking to the Kilkenny Advertiser, Deputy Bobby Aylward said, “Some 24 or 25 Fianna Fail TDs spoke out against the new drink driving plans as they feel there is no real need for such legislation and that there are more important issues on the table at the moment and bigger problems that need to be addressed.”

He also added, “this is a slap in the face for many rural residents and will lead to them being further isolated. It is a step too far for rural areas.”

Mr Aylward added that he is totally opposed to the proposed legislation and has brought his views to the Taoiseach as well as having spoken out against it on numerous occasions at parliament level.

The legislation will reduce the drink-driving limit to a blood alcohol level of 50mg down from 80mg, which is roughly a little under one drink. Those caught with a blood alcohol level between 50 and 80mg will be given six penalty points and a €200 fine under the proposal.
