Borough council meets in heritage council headquarters

The Heritage Council headquarters became the meeting place of the members of Kilkenny Borough Council for the first time this week.

The members and officials of the council hosted their October meeting at the old Bishop’s Palace building on Church Lane in the old part of the city on the invitation of The Heritage Council.

The council was welcomed to the impressive building by CEO of the Heritage Council, Michael Starrett. Gifts were exchanged between the Mayor and the CEO and the Mayor said that it was ‘most welcome to be invited to host a meeting in the ecclesiastical heart of Kilkenny city’, which he said was very much part of Kilkenny and available to the Kilkenny people.

Mr Starrett said he was delighted to welcome the council. He said that Kilkenny was a very special place and that he was a resident here for 13 years and felt privileged to have brought up his family in Kilkenny.

“My children benefited from education, sports, culture and the history of Kilkenny while growing up here. It is a wonderful place to grow up and sterling efforts have been made to improve the environment of the city. We may not always agree on the best ways to do things but we always keep talking to find the best way,” he said.

He added that it was a privilege to work in such a building and he said that nobody there took it for granted.

“It is open to all and this is the most significant meeting to have taken place here to date. You are the most important group of people in Kilkenny city and the privilege is ours to host you here and we are delighted that you accepted our offer.”

The meeting took place in a large meeting room upstairs in the impressive building which was recently nominated for an architectural award.
