In 2007 CEART introduced its PatientWise programme - offering a series of courses to help people with chronic illness or pain, to develop self-help skills and provide patients with tools to self-manage their own condition.
The CEART PatientWise programme now has a proven track record of empowering people to take control of their own lives and of their long-term health condition.
To date 14 courses have been run and feedback from participants is that it gives them new life, new hope, new friends and a new sense of purpose. Two more courses are due to begin next month
Participants bring their own knowledge, wisdom and experience and with that they can help each other. Ceart is working with people who have low self esteem low self confidence, who often feel that they are a burden and that they are no use to anyone else and here on this course they help others. This course facilitates the sharing of information, ideas, support and wisdom.
This is a practical course where a lot is covered over the six sessions.
Self management skills include healthy eating, exercise, relaxation, communication skills, working with health care professionals, planning, problem solving, understanding emotions, guided imagery, and better breathing.
The course was designed in Stanford University, California, by Professor Kate Lorig and her team and is now used as an integral part of health services in many countries throughout the world.
The November courses begin on Tuesday November 3, at the Citizens Information Centre, on the Parade in Kilkenny from 10am-12.30pm and every Tuesday morning for 6 weeks.
A course is also available on Saturday November 7, at The Irish Wheelchair Association, Claddagh Court. Kilkenny from 10am-12.30pm and every Saturday for six weeks.
