Saplings students get a make-over on fashion night

MacDonagh Shopping Centre brought out the runway and transformed from a high street mall into a high-class fashion show venue in aid of Saplings school in Goresbridge last week.

The school raised over €4,000, from the fashion show and some of the students themselves had a starring role in the event.

Children from the school glammed themselves up and strutted their stuff on the catwalk in front of hundreds of people, which clearly demonstrated how effective the school is for autistic children.

Many of the parents were stunned at seeing their children looking confident, relaxed and happy whilst in this busy, highly lit and noisy environment.

Saplings school is an independent, not-for-profit, public interest organisation with the aim of supporting diagnosed autistic children and their families.

The school helps the students achieve their full potential and participate in their family and community life.

Autism is characterised by excesses and deficits in behaviour which cause delays in social communication. Often those affected by the condition are unable to deal with a large social scene, especially if there are also bright lights and loud noises, so it really was remarkable to see the children modelling on stage.

As it is, the school, which is a great asset to Kilkenny, does so much for the children but it is struggling to pay for essentials that are vital for the continuation of the magnificent breakthroughs they are making with autistic children.

Saplings receives Department of Education funding to operate the school, but unfortunately this does not cover the full costs of school operations.

The school is expecting an annual shortfall of around €30,000 this year as a result of having to pay a group work tutor salary, as well as having to fund the purchasing of occupational therapy equipment and learning resources that were not originally part of the budget provided by the Department of Education.

The school also hosted a race night which raised €14,000, and they would like to thank everyone who supported them on both nights.

The fashion show was a huge success and showcased the children and what they have achieved to perfection.
