Historic service to be filmed at St Canice’s Cathedral

St Canice’s Cathedral will be beamed out across the country next week when Kairos TV productions films a very special service that is to take place to mark the 400th anniversary of Kilkenny city charters. The event will then be broadcast on RTE television.

On Sunday October 11 - St Canice’s Day, St Canice’s Cathedral will host an evensong service at 7pm which will be specially adapted to reflect a service of 1609, when King James the first was on the throne of England and Ireland.

Civic dignitaries and the Mayor Malcolm Noonan will attend and also many clergy from the diocese will be present for this historic service.

The music will feature composers of that era and the Cathedral organist Malcolm Proud will play a voluntary by William Byrd.

However, the Lady Vicar of the Cathedral, Rev Elaine Murray, and the ladies choir will have to be in disguise, as in 1609 no women would have had positions in the church.

The people of Kilkenny are invited to go along next Sunday for this historic occasion in the life of the city and the Cathedral of St Canice.

Light refreshments will be served following the service; the flavours will reflect the medieval palate accompanied by St Canice’s mead and monks ale.

This event will be the last civic event in the Cathedral before Dean Norman Lynas leaves Kilkenny for warmer pastures in Bermuda’s Anglican Cathedral.
