Business and academia working together for the better

John Scanlan, commercialisation director with NUI Maynooth will give a talk entitled Innovation and New Opportunities, The Third Level Perspective on the University’s Kilkenny Campus on Thursday October 15, as part of Spirit of Enterprise Week.

The event is free of charge and will include ample time for questions and discussion on how the worlds of business and academia can work together.

John’s talk will focus on how industry and academia can be twinned for the good of the knowledge economy and the creation of jobs. He will give examples of some of the collaborations and new company spins out that have been happening at NUIM and will outline the mechanisms through which industry and entrepreneurs can engage with the Third Level sector in order to explore ways of turning ‘knowledge to money’. It should be noted that the majority of business contacts that have been engaging in this process are SMEs.

Recent examples successful partnerships between research and industry from NUIM include Socowave a company producing the world’s first antenna beam control platform, enabling enhanced mobile communications. Another company, Blue Box Sensors will manufacture biosensors that can track the levels of chemicals in the brain in real time over the course of weeks and months. These sensors will offer insights into the workings of the brain and stand to improve preclinical drug discovery of a range of diseases including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and schizophrenia.

The Commercialisation Office is responsible for the commercialisation of research at NUI Maynooth. This includes developing links with industry; protecting and exploiting NUI Maynooth generated intellectual property via licensing and business start-up and promoting a culture of research commercialisation.

The talk will begin at 7pm at the Kilkenny Campus of NUIM (located at St. Kieran’s College ).
