St Lachtains gallop to intermediate final

St Lachtain’s proved they were a team to be reckoned with last Sunday in Nowlan park.

Whilst the first half of the game was mild and fairly uneventful with a score of only 0-6, 0-5 to the Mooncoin side, Freshford broke from a trot into a thundering a gallop in the second half after an early goal seemed to be the kick they needed.

After the goal by John Fitzgerald, who was fed the ball from Eoin Guinan, Freshford shifted into gear and scored two successive points.

Although Tomas O’Hanlon kept himself in the game and scored a much needed point for Mooncoin, it was clear they hadn’t upped their pace. They were now lengths behind the Freshford side, both on the scoreboard and in hurling ability.

Noel Hickey, Eoin Guinan and Bill Beckett added more points to the scoreboard making the score 1-10 to 0-7. Freshford’s whole team were playing out of their skin and Mooncoin struggled to get into the game.

At this stage, the game had all but died. It was clear that spectators wouldn’t be witnessing that final burst over the finish line that was so intense later on between O’Loughlin’s and Bennettsbridge.

However, at the final furlong, Freshford slowed their pace ever so slightly and Mooncoin’s Keith Kirwan managed to put the ball in the back of the net.

Freshford brutally answered with another goal in the last two minutes.

The final score was St Lachtains 2-11, Mooncoin 1-7.

After Sunday’s performance, the odds on the final between St Lachtains and Bennettsbridge are sure to be even money.
