Civic reception planned for return of hurling teams

Barring a draw in the senior match next Sunday Kilkenny Senior and Minor Hurling teams will be given a civic reception on Monday night, September 7.

The venue as usual will be the Market Yard car park where the teams will be welcomed by the Mayor and members of the borough council.

The teams are expected to arrive at McDonagh train station at 6pm and will proceed by an open top bus to the Market Yard. The route will be via John Street, John’s Bridge, Rose Inn Street, The Parade, High Street, and Parliament Street.

Fans should note that there will be no access to the train station on the night. The best vantage point will be at the Market Yard. The entertainment will begin in the Market Yard at 5pm approximately when local band UP 4 IT will take to the stage.

In order to ensure the enjoyment of all attending, people are requested to act in a responsible manner by co-operating with Gardai, Civil Defence officers, and stewards.

Car parking will be available at Ormonde Street Car Park, McDonagh Junction Car Park, and Kilkenny Borough Council Car Parks at the Fair Green, St Mary’s and Dean Street. Parking in the Ormonde Street Car Park will be at the reduced rate of €1 between 6pm and 10pm. Parking in the borough council car parks will be free from 5pm onwards.

Parking restrictions will be in place in the Market Yard from 3.30pm onwards and traffic restrictions will be in place throughout the day in Kilkenny City to facilitate the homecoming. Restrictions will include a one-way system throughout Monday, September 7.

Pedestrian access to the Market Yard will be via Kieran Street at Kytelers Inn, Parliament Street at the Bank of Ireland and Bateman Quay via John’s Bridge.

As with all events of this nature there will be a large number of children in the Market Yard and in the interest of safety, fans are asked to adhere to any instructions given, be it by signage, stewards, Gardai, Civil Defence, or by public announcement.
