Butts Family Festival to mark seven decades of Connolly Street and Pearse Street

The Butts community is celebrating 70 years of existence with a family festival with a difference on Saturday, August 29.

The Butts Family Festival is been revived to mark the 70th year of the building of Connolly Street and Pearse Street.

Residents, parents and young people have been meeting over the summer months at the Fr McGrath Centre to organise a series of fun activities to mark the anniversary.

A variety of events will take place and including A Miss Congeniality contest for children under 12, bouncing castles, mini Olympics, novelty races, art exhibitions and handball and soccer tournaments. There will also be tea and cakes available to enjoy.

Wendy Taylor, community worker at the Fr McGrath Family Centre in the Butts said

“We are hoping for good weather, however, If the forecast is for a wet Saturday, as so many of the events are outdoors we may need to postpone the festival to the following Saturday.”

Wendy thanked the generosity of local businesses which had so generously responded to local volunteers in sponsoring events and putting up prizes for the many novelty events planned for the children.

There is still time for anybody interested, including former residents of the area, to get involved. A special planning meeting will take place on Monday, August 24, at 7.00pm at the centre and all are welcome.
