Heritage week launches with gunshots at the castle

The launch of Heritage Week is bringing a range of fun activities for all the family to Kilkenny Castle this weekend.

People both young and old can try their hand at hurley making, Celtic drumming, thatching, butter making and many more traditional skills at the opening of National Heritage Week on Saturday August 22 at noon.

The day of events will include lots of children’s entertainment and even military re-enactments so look out for warriors and soldiers with weapons scaling the grounds of Kilkenny Castle throughout the day.

There will also be birds of prey, an animal and bird enclosure, a roaming jester and farmers markets.

The Minister of State at the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Michael Finneran will officially attend the event to officially open Heritage Week.

The day will kick off at 12 noon with the Clonmel Marching Band which will march from the parade to Kilkenny Castle. The gates of the castle will then be thrown open to the public for traditional skill demonstrations and workshops, cookery demonstrations with renowned Irish chef Clodagh McKenna, and all the aforementioned activities.

More than 4,000 people attended the opening of National Heritage Week in Kilkenny Castle last year. The opening on Saturday promises to be a great day out for all the family with all of the entertainment free of charge.

National Heritage Week is co-ordinated by The Heritage Council and funded by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, and is part of European Heritage Day, which is celebrated in 49 countries across Europe.
