KCAT Art and Study Centre celebrates ten years of inclusive arts and drama practise this Saturday, August 8 at the Abbey Meadow, Mill Lane in Callan.
Celebrations start off with a trad session in the car park and then as dusk sets in, there is a fire twirling show leading to the main event, an outdoor spectacle visually telling the story of KCAT. A show of performance, drummming, giant puppetry, a spectacular display of fire drawings and a fireworks grand finale sponsored by Callan Tidy Towns will light up the sky of Callan!
Starting at 7pm that same evening KCAT will launch “Art & Inclusion – The Story of KCAT”; a research project exploring the relevance of inclusive arts practice and arts education as part of lifelong learning. As a case study, it documents ten years of KCAT Art and Study Centre, reflecting the vibrancy and inclusiveness of KCAT as an arts community, emphasising process and evaluating its programmes and outcomes.
Art and Inclusion - 183 full colour pages with accompanying DVD encapsulating events and activities, will be on sale for €25 and can be ordered via barbara@kcat.ie.
As part of the ten year celebrations KCAT Studio artists are curating “Decade” an exhibition to reflect on their work created over ten years. Like in previous exhibitions, the emphasis will be on painting, and will include some sculpture, mixed media and video animation.
This offers the exciting prospect of observing development, trends and recent work by the individual artists. Broad bodies of work will be on display in the gallery and in the actual studio. This is another vibrant and inspiring show from the dedicated and active studio group in KCAT.
The exhibition will include work by: Thomas Barron, Jason Turner, Declan Byrne, Jack Foskin, John Carroll, Francis Casey, Mary Cody, Sinéad Fahey, Karl Fitzgerald, George McCutcheon, Lorna Corrigan, Andrew Pike, Margaret Walker and Eileen Mulrooney. This exhibition will run from the 8-16 August 2009, 10am–4pm.

Townlands art project
Townlands is an art project which is based on an exploration of a local landscape; the Civil Parish of Rathcoole, in the Barony of Gowran, in north County Kilkenny, Ireland.
The goal of the project is the enrichment of the experience of local place and community for all who wish to engage with it. This community-based project, led by artists Alan Counihan and Gypsy Ray, will involve the gathering of local field-names and folklore with the aim of giving them creative expression in both visual and literary form. Community participation will be central to its success.
An exhibition of work informed by the initial process will be exhibited during the Kilkenny Arts Festival at Johnswell Hall, Johnswell, Co Kilkenny.
