The power of thought

Do you realise how powerful your thoughts really are? We think and we breathe unconsciously: Both actions are things we take for granted. But when we feel happy or sad in the body, it is always preceded by our thoughts.

There is a very important relationship between what we think and what we feel. It is imperative to realise that we are constantly thinking. Do not be fooled into thinking that you are already aware of this fact! Just think for a moment about your breathing. Until this moment, you most likely never gave it a thought, until you consciously became aware of the fact right now. Ask yourself, “Am I breathing deeply or shallowly?” For most of us, unless we are out of breath, we simply forget that breathing occurs.

It is estimated that we have 50,000 thoughts a day, but just as with breathing, most people are unaware of what they are thinking. Forgetting what you are thinking - and thinking negatively – can cause serious problems in people’s lives, like unhappiness, anger, inner conflicts and stress. Your thinking always comes back to you as a feeling. Just try getting angry without having an angry thought, or being sad without a sad thought. It just doesn’t work – it’s impossible!

The truth is that in order to experience a feeling, you first have to have a thought that produces that feeling. When you realise this, wonderful things can happen. A woman I know who was diagnosed with terminal cancer said that her positive thoughts willed her to live each day and on into the future. She believed - and I believe too – that her positive thinking had cured her. Some people might call it a miracle, but I see it much more as a natural process of fine tuning our thoughts and feelings to connect to our inner core (or spirit ) of health, happiness and wellbeing.

From personal experience, I know that learning to think positively takes practice, but it is no different to learning a musical instrument: The more you practice, the better you become! So start thinking positively today, and practice, practice, practice – you will be amazed at the difference it makes not only to your life, but also to the lives of those around you.
