James Murphy of Graiguenamanagh Rowing Club recently finished third in the Irish National Rowing Championships in the men’s senior single scull.
This is the highest standard available in Ireland and marks a tremendous achievement for the 27 year old Kilkennyman. James learned to row while living in Scotland but now that he has chosen to compete on the Irish circuit Graiguenamanagh is his local club.
Finishing third at the national championships created quite a stir as James Murphy had done most of his recent rowing in Scotland and would have arrived 'under the radar' at the national championships. His brilliant form at present led him to finish second during the week at the British National championships. Now to top it all off James has been called into the Irish squad for the upcoming home international Regatta to be held this weekend in Nottingham. This quadrangular international features squads from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. James has been selected to represent Ireland in the men’s senior single scull and will also form a double scull.
The selection of James Murphy to represent Graiguenamanagh Rowing Club as part of the Irish team is quite an historic moment for the young club. The rowing club was formed in 2001 and this will be the first time a member has been selected to the national squad.
