Many people living in Kilkenny may never have set foot in some of our cities most historical and beautiful buildings.
However, there is no excuse now not to visit the impressive establishment located in the heart of Kilkenny city centre that is Rothe House and Gardens.
Rothe House has opened up the beautifully and carefully refurbished house and gardens to the public this summer, every Thursday evening, where visitors are invited to take part in a guided tour hosted by the former owner John Rothe (John Coogan ) and his wife (Rose Archer ) in full period costume.
This extremely humorous re-enactment of the couple’s memories of their time living with their ever-growing family is well worth witnessing.
The comical script which was written by well-known Kilkenny writer John Morton depicts the chronological historical activity of the Rothes and their contemporaries during tough Cromwellian times. The audience follows the couple through each room of the beautiful building as they explain their lifestyle of days gone by in each and every room of the house. The wit and humour of their farcical dialogue is extremely amusing and makes for a very entertaining evening.
Guests will also be treated to a glass of wine in the courtyard prior to the commencement of the tour where they will be introduced to their guides - John Rothe and Rose Archer.
Tickets are available on the door although pre-booking is advised in order to avoid disappointment. The tour takes approximately one hour. This type of old-style theatre is the perfect precursor to dinner in one of the local restaurants.
Admission is €10 and includes a glass of wine. The tour takes place every Thursday for the summer months.
