The new Garda division of Kilkenny Carlow has come into being with effect since 6am on Monday, June 29 according to Labour Party councillor Tomás Breathnach.
Cllr Breathnach has requested a meeting between representatives of the Gardai and the elected members for south Kilkenny to clarify all issues of concern with regard to the new arrangements.
The new division was created as part of the national realignment of Garda boundaries and will facilitate the administrative function of the Joint Policing Committee in County Kilkenny.
As a result of the changes south Kilkenny will form part of the Thomastown District with the exception of the Ferrybank area (inside the new ring road ) which will be provided with a police service from Waterford.
Cllr Breathnach has been informed that transitional service agreements are in place to facilitate the changeover from the existing service arrangements. Mullinavat Garda station is to provide 8am to 2am cover from July and it is intended that 24-hour cover in the south Kilkenny area will be available from Mooncoin from September.
