Out with the old and in with the new

There were some changes to our local authorities made last weekend following the elections - some self determined while others simply lost their seats.

In Kilkenny Borough Council Fianna Fail’s Michael Lanigan and Fine Gael’s Pat Crotty stepped down and did not put themselves forward for election this year.

Their seats were filled by both a Fine Fail party member and a Fine Gael party member.

Joe Malone took Michael Lanigan’s seat while Pat Crotty’s first cousin David Fitzgerald took the Fine Gael seat.

Labour lost a seat with Noel Frawley not regaining his position. This seat was not regained by the Labour party as had been hoped, but by Sinn Fein’s Kathleen Funchion.

Meanwhile in the county, Independent Dixie Doyle of the Thomastown Electoral Area lost his seat. There was one seat fewer in this area this year following the re-jigging of the electoral areas and Doyle lost out in this re-shuffle.

Long time Fianna Fail councillor Tommy Brennan was a sad loss to the council this year. His seat went to newcomer Sean Treacy also of Fianna Fail . Fianna Fail’s Pat Walsh also lost his seat to Eamon Aylward.

The two Fine Gael councillors who decided to retire this year, Dick Dowling and Catherine Phelan, both gave their seats up to other members of Fine Gael.

Fideles Doherty and Anne Marie Irish took the two Piltown seats.

Of the three Fianna Fail seats that were lost - three more were regained. Of the three Fine Gael seats lost - three more were regained. Sinn Fein gained a new seat and Labour lost a seat in this year’s elections.
