Roots music legend returns to Kilkenny

Roots music legend and country pioneer Jason Ringenberg is returning to Cleeres tonight Friday, June 12 at 8pm as part of his summer tour.

Ringenberg is best known as the frontman of Jason And The Scorchers, although he has since become respected for his solo recordings. He originally became interested in the music of Bob Dylan and Hank Williams, and upon relocating to Nashville, Tennessee in 1981, he sought to create an original band that would combine elements of folk, country, rockabilly, and punk rock. He accomplished his goal by forming Jason And the Scorchers shortly thereafter, with Warner Hodges (guitar ), Jeff Johnson (bass ), and Perry Baggs (drums ). The quartet issued several critically acclaimed releases before Jeff Johnson left. From here the band decided to go on a break for few years.

Ringenberg returned three years later with a solo debut, One Foot In The Honky Tonk which was more closely aligned to country than to the Scorchers' renowned punkabilly style. It was not long before Ringenberg reunited the Scorchers, issuing two new studio albums (1995's A Blazing Grace and the following year's Clear Impetuous Morning ). He resumed his solo career in the new millennium. A Pocketful Of Soul (2000 ) and Empire Builders (2004 ) were issued on Ringenberg's newly formed record label, Courageous Chicken.

He also records children's music under the alias Farmer Jason. The show starts tonight Friday at 8pm and tickets cost €15.
