With the recent launch of Barterpoint.ie, two Kildare based entrepreneur’s have come up with a novel way to escape the recession.
Ian Stewart and Konrad Artmanski developed the site as a means to combating the growing levels of unemployment, pay cuts and general lack of funds that consumers are encountering on a daily basis. “During these times we felt it necessary to act. People don't have the money they used to have but still require goods and services, this is where we step in. The site was developed as a way to encourage people to use what they have, be it skills or unused or unwanted goods and get what they require... It’s that simple really said Mr Stewart.”
With the advances in transport and communications, now is the ideal time to take bartering to a new level... the internet! Bartering also has a lot of pros compared to normal shopping. Firstly you can free up money that you may need for other essential goods or services... all that is required is your free time or unwanted goods. You can develop excellent connections and perhaps benefit financially through the network you have developed. Its also better for the environment as you may trade unwanted goods rather than dumping them, to quote an old phrase - One man’s junk is another man’s gold!'
Barterpoint also offers a unique rental section for people who may have bought tools or equipment and most of the time it is left sitting idle in a garage or shed. On Barterpoint.ie, they can hook up with people in their area and rent out their tools and equipment.
“The main purpose of this site is to bring the sense of community back.’ comments Mr Stewart. With this in mind we have also included a co-operative section for people who may require some help and vice versa”.
Another unique feature on this website is the local businesses board. A lot of local business don't have the time or resources to advertise or set up a website. Through this section local businesses can advertise their goods and services and interact with the local community and potential customers.
