Young candidate’s posters destroyed by vandals

The youngest candidate running for Kilkenny Borough Council has had his posters targeted by a bad-minded vandal.

Fine Gael’s Darren Murphy is disgusted at what he claims is targeted vandalism.

“My posters started going up midweek, and since then have been targeted by vandals.

“I've already had to take down 10 per cent of my posters as they have had obscenities written across them or I'm drawn to look like Hitler. I believe it is one person doing it at night with a black marker as most of the posters have the same graffiti. I am also aware that more of them have been affected that I haven’t yet got to.”

He is so upset about the incidence that he has contacted Kilkenny Gardai.

“ I've rung the Gardaí over the matter and we are looking into the possibility of finding the culprits,” he said.

This is not the first incident of vandalism of posters in this year’s election campaign and several other candidates have also reported incidents to the Gardai.

It is a criminal offence to tamper with election posters and those caught in the act could be fined a hefty sum.
