The sound of music will resonate around Owning (near Piltown ) in South Kilkenny at the beginning of next month when schoolchildren from the local school will launch a CD of original songs penned by Mullinavat songwriter Ned Egan.
The CD will be launched at the school on Friday June 6 when the public will hear for the first time the musical collaboration between Mr Egan and the schoolchildren.
Mr Egan has been associated with the school for the best part of two decades with storytelling, songwriting and poetry writing and he is thrilled with the outcome.
“It was little over a year ago when I mentioned to Pat O’Gorman , head of Owning school in South Kilkenny that his scholars might make a CD of some of my songs.
Pat took the idea on as a special project and over a few months we worked with the children, most from the senior class to produce a sound that is both redolent of innocent childhood and of great young people entering the adult world.”
The musicians have been praised by Mr Egan for their bravery in cutting the disc and he said that the group, none of whom are older than 14, entered the studio to sing songs they had never heard before and completed the recording in one session.
“Their confident attitude and the application of their gifts and talents was a joy to see. In these hard times, they are a shining example and have been a source of sweet and great pleasure to all whose lives they have touched,” he said.
The singers Teresa Born, Anna Cuddihy, Kellyann Doyle, Aislinn Duggan, Niamh Duggan, Roisin Duggan, Aoife Dunne, Laura Dunne, Micheal Dunne, Jason Ellis, Sarah Farrell, Saoirse Fleming, Amie Grace, Eanna Hardesty, Rachael Hoban, Conor Keever, Heather Keever, Tom Kenny, Cormac Kirby, Patrick Kirwan, Juliana Moldovan, Shane O’Swyer, Shane O’Dwyer, Padraig O’Gorman, Martin Phelan, Jean Power, Alice Talbot and Emily Walsh.
The musicians were Michael Hayes, Elaine Downey, Noel O’Regan, Fr Paschal Moore, Marie Duggan, and Jim Grace.
