Sad scenes as Seamus Costello is laid to rest

Tributes were paid by the Mayor Pat Crotty to a much-loved and respected Kilkenny business man who was laid to rest on Wednesday.

Seamus Costello got a fitting send off on Wednesday last when hundreds attended his funeral on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

Seamus was the much-loved owner of Murphy Jewellers on High St in the city who always had a kind word and a smile for customers. He worked in the business for almost 40 years and built it up to be the popular and successful jewellers it is today.

He was a former president of Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce and Mayor Pat Crotty said that he had shown vision in the past in generating interest in the Chamber and in local business.

“He was a great character with a very strong work ethic and a huge enthusiasm for life. He also had a wonderful sense of humour,” he said.

“He was a great character in the true sense of the word.”

The funeral cortege headed by a guard of honour organised by Kilkenny Chamber, stopped outside Murphys Jewellers on High Street where staff stood in silence at the shop window. A wreath was placed in the doorway.

Seamus died on Monday morning after an illness at his home surrounded by his family. He was laid to rest after funeral mass in St Mary’s Cathedral in Hugginstown Cemetery.
