Determined Skeoug earn the silverware

St Fiachra’s NS Skeoughvosteen 3-7, Scoil Bhride Goresbridge 2-2

The first of this year’s primary schools girls’ football finals took place on Thursday last at Nowlan Park. Played in glorious sunshine the girls of Goresbridge and Skeoughvosteen national schools served up a treat in the ‘C’ final, and surprised many with the array of skills they displayed.

Skeoughvosteen suffered defeat in last year’s final and were determined to claim the title this year while their neighbours Goresbridge have been very impressive in all their games and have unearthed a few stars for the future.

However, the St Fiachra’s girls put up a hard fought battle to make up for last year’s disappointment and claimed the primary schools C title.

Leinster final mini games

Despite Kilkenny’s intermediate ladies losing out at semi final stage to Wexford in the TG4 Leinster championship the schoolgirl stars of the county took their place in Dr Cullen Park to play in the half time mini game at last Sunday’s provincial final between Wexford and Longford. Eleven lucky girls were selected from this year’s schools finalists to represent Kilkenny and the girls put on a great display in their game against a Westmeath selection. The game finished level at 1-1 a piece and the teams were given a huge round of applause by the large crowd at Dr Cullen Park.

Juvenile development training

Girls aged 10 to 14 years from the city and surrounding areas are invited to join training at James Park on Saturday next at 6pm. Training commenced last week under the guidance of county intermediate stars Eimear Roantree and Catriona Corr and 25 girls spent an enjoyable hour learning the skills of Gaelic football. The cost is just €2 per week and beginners are particularly welcome. Meanwhile training for under 14s continues on Saturday mornings in Blacks and Whites GAA club for girls in the locality and any area that would like to start a similar venture can contact any member of the ladies’ football county board.
