Independent candidate in the upcoming local elections Mick Greene has called for the installation of a roundabout at the top of the Granges Road at Brannigan’s corner.
He was speaking in light of recent reports that there had been 14 accidents at the black spot in just two years.
He said, “I welcome any commitment from the council to deal with the treacherous bend on Granges Road known as Brannigan's corner. However, I have concerns that the application of an anti-slip surface will only prove to be a short-term solution to the problem. I would encourage the council to consider the installation of a roundabout at Brannigan's corner. This would mean that the adverse camber of the road would no longer be a factor and would also act as a traffic calming measure. Similarly it would allow the installation of roundabout warning signs in advance of the corner which would in turn act as a deterrent to excessive speeding”. Mr Greene added that the initial cost of installing a roundabout may be high, but he believes that it would have a lower long-term cost than periodically reapplying the non-slip surface at €10,000 a shot.
“Obviously, any decision would need to be made following full consultation with the residents of Granges Road, Parkview Drive, Parkview and Dunningstown Road,” he concluded.
