The recent publication of the HSE’s report into elder abuse and into the extent of physical, sexual, financial abuse and neglect of the elderly, is a healthy indication that somebody cares, according to Labour Party Councillor Marie Fitzpatrick.
She said that all abuse is abhorrent and has no place in a civilised society.
“We all - not just a health institution - must continue to help and support older people who are victims of abuse, and also challenge negative and stereotypical attitudes generated towards older people in general.
“Information within the updated document describes the main developments of the HSE's elder abuse service in 2008 as well as providing, for the first time, a detailed analysis of the range and extent of elder abuse from referrals to specialist services.”
She also said that the specialist staff, employed by the HSE through the Local Health Offices, dealing with cases of elder abuse, continue to make significant progress in combating all forms of elder abuse in our society in Kilkenny.
“More than any other group of people alive, older people have contributed the most to the development of this city and county. They have seen, and added to, the vast changes that have occurred. Society is enriched - culturally, financially and spiritually - largely through the efforts of our older people. Thankfully, the majority of older people live full and active lives,” she pointed out.
“Unfortunately, whether intentionally or not, a small number of our older population experience some abuse. It is therefore important to their welfare and quality of life that they are assured somebody out there cares about then. It is equally important to give them the comfort of knowing that a phone call or direct contact with a trained health professional is all that is needed to bring relief from a torment,” she added.
Councillor Fitzpatrick said that the collection and collation of elder abuse data will prove invaluable in informing the planning and delivery of services for older people.
