Local residents who have been terrorised by screeching modified cars roaring around Kilkenny Retail Park late at night have been victorious in their campaign to stop the dangerous activity.
Work began on Monday to make it impossible for so called Boy Racer' to continue using the car park as a venue for racing and dangerous stunts.
Councillor Andrew McGuinness has assisted the residents in coming to an arrangement with Mason Owens and Lyons, the management company for the retail park, and works are due to be complete by Friday.
Speaking to the Kilkenny Advertiser, Cllr Andrew McGuinness said, "Sentry posts began to install telescopic bollards that will section off parts of the car park after business hours and prevent anti-social behaviour."
"Additional kerbing will also be put in to stop cars racing around late at night. Once this is complete the management company have agreed to install speed ramps and Kilkenny Gardai have agreed to continue to monitor the area," he said.
"These works will prevent any further anti social behaviour in the car park and it’s great news for neighbouring residents who have endured sleepless nights for years. The residents associations have worked tirelessly with myself, the retail park and the Gardai and so this is a great victory for them," he said.
Chairman of the Outrath Court Residents Association, Paul Whitnell said "I'm looking forward to the completion of all the works as it will end a lot of misery for residents and we appreciate all the work Cllr Andrew McGuinness has done on our behalf. Once works are complete we will hold another joint residents meeting with ourselves, Westfield, Parcnagowan and Springmount, to continue working with the management company to ensure the issue is resolved."
