A few basics before you open your wardrobe

Recognise your assets and try to go for clothes that will flatter your body. If you have nice legs, show them off, if you have nice breasts, don’t hesitate to reveal a bit of flesh, but don’t ever attempt to show more than you cover. There are a few simple rules you can follow in order to make the most of your curves.

Always remember that wearing clothes that are too tight will never make you look slim, quite the opposite, you will appear fatter than you are. If you happen to have such items of clothing, unless you’re planning losing a few kilograms, you might as well give those away.

If your tummy is a bit bigger than you would like, textured fabrics and wrap-around tops are a very good idea. High, round, and turtle-neck tops will look great on you, provided your neck is long and slim. Otherwise, avoid those and go for tops that are open at the neck to lengthen and slim it.

If you’re not very tall, try to say no to combinations of dramatic contrast between top and bottom — these will only cut your figure in half. Colours are crucial when it comes to looking good, sometimes they’re even more important than the shape, and definitely the brand. When you’re thinking of incorporating shiny fabrics into your outfit, think twice. They will only look well on areas of your body that can stand up to being shown in the bright light. Black goes with anything, some say. But does it? Combining it with bright colours makes it look dull and the other colours tacky. Remember not to resort to wearing black around your face if you are pale or have bags under your eyes. You will usually look impressive in black if your hair and skin are dark and you team it with greys, whites (or ecru ), and reds.

Accessories are always a great way to liven up your outfit. If your breasts are quite big in a V-neck and showing them off is not in your nature, wear a large necklace to cover them up a little, however try to avoid long pendants that nestle in your cleavage. You should go for longer earrings if your face is chubby or you have a double chin.

Are your ankles quite thick? You know then you should refrain from wearing delicate, strappy heels, ballerina-style shoes, or ankle straps which cut across the ankle. If you are pear-shaped, avoid graceful kitten heels. There’s nothing worse than trousers that are too short! Trousers legs should always fall to the bottom of the heel. You should leave black shoes where they are, unless you’re planning on wearing darker colours. They never look good with light-coloured clothing. And hopefully, the rule ‘ditch your white socks when going for black trousers or black shoes’ (in fact, ditch your white sock altogether! ) is a given.
