The Hardcourt Singles League began in earnest this week. However, players are reminded that Sunday, April 19 is the final date for completion of all matches.

Friday night’s tournament attracted a big entry – so much so that three grades were catered for. In the first, where it was the ladies disputing matters, it was a close call between the prize-winners. Kate Whitty and Sinead Kiely put in a sterling performance to seize the runner-up prize. However, Ruth McGree and Mary Conway edged into first place, by virtue of one game.

In the penultimate section, Martin Mullally and Anne-Marie Brennan provided strong opposition indeed, in taking the second prize. Ed Brennan and Catherine Jackman proved to be the dominant force in taking first place.

The big guns were out in force in the remaining grade, as Colm Culleton and Sheila Nolan proved to be an elusive partnership for the second place in the grade. Jimmy Morrow and Carmel Nolan seized the top prize in impressive style.

Saturday, April 4 is an important date for any player’s diary. Once again, for another year, the annual charity tournament in aid of The Kilkenny Home Care, is taking place. The tennis on this occasion focuses on The Tommie Tyrrell Cup. This is indeed another opportunity to recognise and value the memory of our dear friend, Tommie Tyrrell. As many will recall, last year’s tournament proved to be a lavish affair, which was supported so generously by numerous members. This year’s event promises to be equally impressive, as the organisers of the event make the necessary arrangements for a successful night. The format will be similar to last year – tennis, a sumptuous meal followed by music to cater for all tastes. Tickets are being rapidly snapped up, so it is advisable to make your purchase quickly.
