Unique environmental awareness through theatre

Prince Charles last week delivered an impassioned speech in which he warned that “the world had less than 100 months to save the planet.” He warned that as the world’s economy headed deeper into recession it would be easy to lose sight of the bigger picture and forget the reality that the world is facing significant levels of climate change and global warming.

And he is not the only person who has been using his profession or status to hammer home the need for action.

Up and coming Irish comedian Abie Philbin Bowman returns to Kilkenny tomorrow night with his explosive new show ‘Eco-friendly Jihad.’ As the title suggest Bowman plays the part of an environmentalist who; in a bid to reduce US carbon emissions joins Al Qaeda.

The sandal wearing and bearded environmentalist is the brainchild of Dublin stand-up Abie Philbin Bowman who made his Edinburgh Fringe debut in 2006 with ‘Jesus: The Guantanamo Years’ which depicts Jesus Christ as a US immigration detainee.

The show received rave reviews and sold out at the festival for three weeks. The show’s success continued and Bowman toured extensively in the UK and Ireland.

Bowman’s latest role as an environmentalist turned terrorist delivers an important message to audiences that climate change is far more destructive than terrorism, and as Prince Charles stressed last week in Brazil is a major challenge that the world has to combat.

‘Eco -friendly Jihad’ will be performed at the Watergate Theatre on Saturday March 21 for one night only. Tickets cost €14 and are available at the Watergate Theatre Box Office. Tel 056 7761674.
