Architects slam Galway’s planning process

Galway City Council’s planning department is one of the five worst in the country, according to a new survey by the Royal Institute of Architects.

The new survey carried out last week showed that Sligo County Council provided the best planning service in the country - with a 62 per cent satisfaction rating - and Clare County Council the worst - with fewer than 40 per cent of architects not happy with its service.

Just over 40 per cent of respondents were satisfied with the Galway City Council’s planning department marking it as the fourth worst in the country.

When questioned on the issue last week Galway City Council declined to comment. A spokesperson said, “Without all the details of this study, on what basis it was carried out, and over what period of time, it would be unfair of us to comment.”

The council spokesperson did however point out that there has been recent improvement in the planning department: customers can now get their applications validated within 24 hours and all planning documents are now online.
