Galway shooting trial begins tomorrow

Champion weight-lifter pleads not guilty to shotgun charges

A champion weightlifter will face trial tomorrow in connection with a shooting in the city last April in which another man lost part of his hand.

Anthony McDonagh (42 ) of 37 Tulach Ard, Circular Road was arrested after the incident on April 18 last and has been in custody since.

He faces two charges of having a sawn-off shotgun and a shotgun cartridge in his possession with intent to endanger life at Whitestrand Road, Salthill, Galway. Mr McDonagh is further charged with recklessy causing serious harm to Martin Ward of Corrach Buí on the same date.

Mr McDonagh was refused bail by the District Court in April and a subsequent bail application to the High Court was also unsuccessful.

Last week in Galway Circuit Criminal Court Mr Donagh pleaded not guilty to all three charges. A jury was then put in place to hear evidence on the case, which begins on Tuesday and is expected to last the week.

Mr McDonagh has been remanded in custody until the commencement of the trial.

Martin Ward (21 ) of Corrach Buí, Rahoon, Galway, lost his thumb and a finger, while a number of pellets also lodged in his abdomen after he was shot at point blank range on Whitestrand Road just outside the city centre in April.
