Concern for over 100 jobs in Galway

There is concern for more than 100 jobs in Galway with the news that a major insurance firm is reviewing its operations in the region.

Insurance firm Churchill is reviewing its operations in the city, where more than 100 people are employed, as the firm's parent, Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS ), seeks to cut costs.

It is believed that the move could result in major layoffs or even the closure of the Galway customer service centre.

Churchill set up the Irish base in 2002 and said that it would employ 600 people within five years, but those targets were not met.

It is understood that the company is in discussions with IDA Ireland, which grant-aided the Galway operation.

A company spokeswoman said that it is continually reviewing how to manage its businesses and that if there is any announcement to be made, employees would be informed first.
