A minute by minute look at how Sunday’s Cup tie unfolded.
2 – Early shots from John Lester and Ciaran Foley are both blocked as Galway try to take advantage of the strong wind at their backs.
3 – Lester’s long range free is on target but Gerard Doherty is well placed to catch it.
8 – Vinny Faherty connects with Jeff Kenna’s delivery but no one has read his header back across the box and Doherty comes out to claim.
12 – Mark Farren has Derry City’s first sight of goal but drags his shot right and wide.
17 – Galway’s first corner is taken by captain for the day Jay O’Shea. He receives a return pass from Lester but fires wildly over from the right of the area.
18 – Recalled striker Jesper Jorgensen controls on his chest and fires in a volley from the left hand side which Doherty fears is goal-bound but ends up a yard outside the right upright. Good stuff from the Dane.
21 – Another corner for the home side results in a whistle from Alan Kelly. However, it is not for Galway’s fourth penalty in consecutive games. Kelly instead awards a free out for a push on Clive Delaney by Faherty.
25 – Classy defending from Seamus Conneely at left full denies Sammy Morrow an opportunity to cross. The Inverin man executes a tackle and retains possession in the same movement.
28 – Derry’s Gareth McGlynn has room to shoot from the edge of the area but floats a shot high and over Gary Roger’s crossbar.
30 – For all the home side’s commitment and workrate, a failure to work the Derry ‘keeper is worrying and may yet come back to haunt them when facing the wind in the 2nd half.
36 – A crunching tackle from Lester on Farren earns approval from the home faithful.
38 – Closest so far from United as Jonathan Keane chips in a lovely ball for O’Shea, who spins well and rolls a shot across the face of goal. Kelly mystifies the visitors by awarding a corner when Doherty was clearly beaten by the shot.
42 – Kenna is drawn out to the left touchline and concedes a corner, Derry’s first of the game. Delaney rises well but cannot keep his header down.
43 – A let off for Galway as Niall McGinn switches to the right and gets a yard of pace in the box. His cut back is missed by Farren but Morrow has a chance to shoot but hesitates before driving high and over.
HALF TIME – Alan Kelly blows his whistle 85 seconds into injury time. The level of Derry boss Stephen Kenny’s agitation on the sideline has been indicative of how poorly he thinks his side have played. He refrains from making any changes at the break and Galway also are unchanged as the sides return for action.
50 – As Galway did, Derry are now enjoying more territory due to the wind at their backs. Ciaran Foley recovers well to foil a Derry attack and the Candystripes force a number of corners, one of which is splendidly headed off the line by Alan Keane. Corner taker McGinn appeals that the ball had crossed the line but no goal is given.
54 – The crowd rise as Jorgensen looks set to break the deadlock but he has already been flagged offside.
59 – A sustained period of good play by the home side ends with Faherty dragging a shot wide. Galway are coping better with the strain of attacking into the elements but Doherty is yet to be stretched into action.
62 – O’Shea forces a corner which his manager Kenna heads over the bar.
64 – GOAL FOR DERRY CITY: A real sucker punch from the visitors as McGlynn flicks on for Farren to race away and clinically finish across Rogers into the bottom left corner. Very harsh on the hosts.
67 – Lester booked for a sliding tackle.
68 – Derry make their first change, introducing Thomas Stewart for Sammy Morrow.
69 – McGinn sidefoots over at the back post. Derry now pushing for the second that would probably kill off the tie.
71 – Mark McChrystal booked for a lunge on Faherty.
73 – Ciaran Foley makes way for Derek Glynn, who will now partner Faherty in attack.
77 – Gareth McGlynn booked for kicking the ball away.
78 – An agonising miss by Faherty as Lester’s cross from the right is deflected to the striker at the back post but his reactionary flick isn’t enough to guide the ball into the net, as the ball rolls inches wide of the post.
83 – Derry are sitting back on their lead now, content to hit on the break. Thomas Stewart fires over when well placed.
85 – Paul Sinnott does very well to get to the endline but his driven cross is intercepted at the front post.
90 – Stewart again goes close before McGlynn tests Rogers with a crisp strike. The ball is at the wrong end of the field and fatigue is taking its toll on United’s effort.
94 – Faherty has a chance to cross but it is blocked and the last passage of play sees Rogers make two fantastic saves. A gallant performance from a side minus five regulars. A fantastic Cup run comes to an end.
