Business People

A profile of one of Galway’s leading personalities

Finding the right chef or waiters, keeping up with health and safety standards, or just knowing the best way to set your establishment up for food service can often be a stressful and complicated matter so why not let FnB Recruitment Solutions take the strain?

FnB Recruitment Solutions, set up by Nigel Murray and his wife Magaly only two weeks ago, is the only recruitment agency which specifically caters for the hospitality industry in the west of Ireland, sourcing staff from the kitchen porter right up to general manager.

As a former executive head chef in The Ardilaun hotel, Nigel is very familiar with how frustrating interviewing people can be. He said, “Not a week went by when I wasn’t interviewing. It got more and more frustrating, especially dealing with recruitment agencies. After seeing the CVs I might call back four for interview but find out that the agency hasn’t checked out their references and they either didn’t work there or worst, were sacked. There was a lot of time wasting sourcing staff. This is definitely an area where we can help. This is an industry I know. I and my wife set up the business to deal specifically in hospitality which includes hotels, catering companies, staff for functions such as the Oyster Festival or the Galway Races, anything that has food and beverage, hence the name FnB.”

Nigel has an extensive background and experience in the hospitality industry. After studying in Athlone, he went to work at the Zetland in Connemara, Dunloe Castle in Killarney, Clifford’s Restaurant in Cork, various hotels in Switzerland, Italy, Germany and then onto Australia and New Zealand. He then spent 10 years in South America, in Lima and Peru, where he opened two Irish pubs, ran a fish restaurant, a bar bistro, and an outdoor catering service.

When Nigel set up FnB he made the decision to start off small and grow from there. He says, “We can meet every candidate before sending them off to the client. It’s very hands on. I want the company to first establish itself, get a good reputation for professionalism, so that when a hotel or pub wants staff we are the first they think of.

Some of the areas where FnB can provide solutions include: Representing qualified chefs or waiters who have come back from abroad and are looking for work; and having part-time staff on the books so that restaurants can call them when a chef is off sick. There’s also the consultancy element to the company where it can provide advice in various different areas. FnB is also hoping to expand in the near future to providing staff for larger functions by having an elite group of 15 waiting staff who are professionally trained.
