Arts graduate fined for Supermac’s ‘performance’

A performing arts graduate put on quite a show when she was caught fighting at Supermac’s in Eyre Square and then proceeded to kick and “spit out” during arrest.

Naringa Katiluite (21 ), a Lithuanian national with an address at Flat 1, 17 High Street, Galway, appeared at Galway District Court last week and pleaded guilty to the charges of being intoxicated in a public place, threatening and abusive behaviour, and failure to obey Garda orders on August 24, 2008, at Eyre Square, Galway.

Inspector Mick Coppinger told the court that at 4.30am Garda David Clarke was on duty in Eyre Square when he received reports of a disturbance at Supermac’s. When he arrived at the scene he observed the defendant involved in a “verbal altercation” with a number of others. He added that the defendant was very intoxicated at the time.

When Judge Mary Fahy quizzed her about the incident the defendant replied that there was a fight but that she didn’t know why it had started as she didn’t know the people she was fighting with. The defendant, who has been in the country for three years and is currently unemployed, added that she used to work part time doing different jobs.

“It’s not very nice behaviour but you’re being very honest in a way. She’s admitting she shouldn’t have done it,” said Judge Fahy.

However Inspector Coppinger told Judge Fahy that when arrested the defendant “kicked out and spat out”.

“I didn’t spit,” said the defendant who then explained that she had recently graduated from college a for performing arts.

“You put on a performance all right,” replied Judge Fahy who convicted and fined the defendant €100 for being intoxicated and €200 for failure to obey Garda orders. The remaining charge was taken into consideration.
