Farmer saved by wellies

Galway farmer Tom Callaghy will probably never leave home without his wellies again after the rain-friendly footwear saved his life when he was struck by lightning during an electrical storm.

Mr Callaghy was sheepshearing on his farm in Claremadden, Killimor on Thursday evening when he was struck by the lightning which rolled in as part of an electrical storm in the area. The 35-year-old farmer was thrown through the air on impact of the bolt, leaving behind scorched earth in his place.

The rubber soles of Mr Callaghy’s wellington boots are believed to have acted as an insulator saving the man’s life.

Mr Callaghy was rushed to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe and was released later that evening.
