A woman was arrested yesterday after a man was found dead following what gardaí believe to be a hit and run traffic collision.
The deceased man, believed to be in his 60s, has been named locally as Pakie Lynch, and was discovered in Drumgriffin, Corrandulla, Co Galway at approximately 8.50am yesterday morning.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and a post-mortem was carried out by the deputy state pathologist Dr Michael Curtis last night in UHG.
The woman, who is 37, was arrested following the incident and at the time of going to print she was being detained at Galway Garda Station.
Detectives investigating the collision are now calling on witnesses to come forward.
A garda spokesperson said, “Gardaí would like anybody who was on the Lough George to Corrandulla road between 1am and 9am to contact them on 091-538000.
“Gardaí would also like to speak to the female occupants of a BMW car which stopped at the scene of the crash and contacted the emergency services.”
The road at the scene was closed yesterday for forensic examination.
Meanwhile a man in his early 30s from Connemara was arrested and was being questioned by gardaí in Galway after a pedestrian was struck by a car and killed early yesterday.
The incident occurred on the main road through Carraroe at 1.50am and the 40-year-old victim, who is not local and who has not yet been named, was walking on the road when he was struck.
The body the the male victim was removed to University Hospital Galway where a post mortem was being carried out last evening.
The driver of the vehicle which struck the man was arrested at the scene and brought to Salthill Garda Station where he was questioned yesterday. He was later released without charge and a file on the incident is to go to the DPP.
The road through the village was closed all day yesterday as gardaí carried out their investigation.
