A woman was foaming at the mouth when Gardaí were called to deal with her, Galway District Court has heard.
The woman appeared in court charged with engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour in a public place on a city street at 4pm on July 8 last.
When Gardaí arrived they found her in a highly intoxicated state and she became very abusive towards them.
Judge John King heard that she was so drunk and belligerent that she was foaming at the mouth. Gardaí tried to calm her down but she refused to do so and had to be arrested for her own safety and the safety of the public. She was on bail for another matter at the time.
Judge King asked her solicitor if she was doing anything useful with herself. The defence replied that she would be happy to do community service if the court decided this.
The judge imposed 80 hours of community service in lieu of six weeks in prison, and took other charges she faced in relation to the incident into account.
