Follow us up

It is all happening in Carlow as FC Carlow prepare to compete in the new FAI under 20 Eircom League of Ireland.

Over 50 players from all over the region attended trials and a panel of 32 elite players are currently in pre-season training.

“It’s fantastic to be working with such a talented and focused group of players,” said head coach, Pat Purcell, “and everyone at the club is very excited at the prospect of making a real challenge at Eircom League level”.

A highly professional approach to training continues as the club has formed a working relationship with the Sports Physiology Department in the Institute of Technology in Carlow.

Former South African Olympian, Paul Byrne and local strength and conditioning expert, Damien Sheehan are implementing a testing and resistance program individually tailored to each player.

This testing and conditioning program is unique in the country and is on a par with those implemented by many of the top premiership teams in England.

“For most players this is the second year on the program,” said Paul Byrne, “and their improvement in their overall physical condition is fantastic.”

The club hopes to continue this program over the next two to three years, which will see these players achieve the highest professional standards of fitness.

The under 20 Eircom League takes off in mid September and FC Carlow are proud to be the first team to represent this area at the highest level in football in Ireland.

As the club looks forward to welcoming all the top clubs in Ireland to Carlow, such as Cork City, Bohemians, Shamrock Rovers, and Derry City, it will encourage the people of the south-east to “follow us up to Carlow” this season.
