A local councillor has asked the town council to make their policy on smoking in the town park clearer.
Cllr Des Hurley told a recent meeting of the town council that on a visit to the park recently he had noticed that people were smoking in a specially designated area for children.
“Would it be possible for signs to be erected to make that part of the park a no-smoking zone,” he asked.
Cllr Hurley also raised concerns about dogs being let loose from their leads in the park after a security man was forced to make a major effort to chase after a dog which wasn’t on a lead.
Cllr Walter Lacey asked if dogs should be prohibited from the park but Cllr Hurley said there were a number of people who used the park with their dogs on leads and acted responsibly.
Council Engineer Kieran Cullinane said signs could be erected to ask people to refrain from smoking without any major effort, suggesting that most people would be respectful of that.
And he added that more might be put up to warn dog owners to keep their pets on a lead to ensure the safety of others.
