Young man arrested for elderly woman’s mugging

A young man barely out of his teens, was arrested for the mugging of local lady, Nora Gordon, this week.

Gardaí arrested a 20-year man and following questioning, released him pending instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mrs Gordon (83 ), who lives on Church Street in Graiguecullen, was running errands on Saturday, June 26, when she was set upon outside Domino’s Pizza on Castle Street.

A man jumped at her from behind and ripped her bag from her arm.

Mrs Gordon, who is recovering with relatives, said she was thrown to the footpath and she was subsequently removed to St Luke’s Hospital for x-ray.

Suffering a dislocated arm, Mrs Gordon was fortunate enough to get her handbag back as an unidentified taxi driver raced after the thief and managed to wrestle the bag from him.

Local priest Father John Dunphy said the attack, the second in that parish in as many weeks, is unsettling.

“I hope our society isn't becoming one where people are afraid to go out on their own,” he said.
