Carlow man in court on human trafficking charge

A Carlow man and a woman who were last week accused of human trafficking, have been further remanded in custody by a Welsh court.

Thomas John Carroll (47 ) and 31-year-old Shamiela Clark, both of Castlemartin in Pembrokeshire, appeared briefly at Swansea Crown Court via video-link on Tuesday.

Both are accused of human trafficking into and out of the UK and Ireland, controlling prostitution and money laundering.

They were arrested as part of a joint operation between gardaí in Carlow and around the country and the British police.

Mr Carroll has been held at Swansea Prison since his arrest, and Ms Clark at Eastwood Park women's jail in Bristol.

The images of both appeared side by side via video link yesterday and each spoke only to confirm their names.

They originally appeared at Llanelli Magistrates' Court on December 6, where they were remanded in custody until the court hearing on Tuesday last.

Both were remanded in custody for a further nine weeks and two days, until 23 February, 2009, when a plea and case management hearing will take place at the same venue.
