Carne Riding Club was blessed with glorious sunshine. Overlooking the Wexford coastline, this popular event was very well supported by riders from the South-east region and also out of region competitors, which is always a welcome sign. The cross-country was relatively strong, with a few technical skinny fences to negotiate for the open and advanced intermediate riders. The log into the water at the early end of the track caused a few mishaps across the grades.
Lisa O'Kane & Grundy secured another solid victory to their tally in the open class, with 17 penalties in hand over her fellow competitor Tara Lee from the Foxborough RC & Arkx who slotted into 2nd place. Lisa is currently leading the open section of the Viking League with maximum points for her 3 wins so far.
Pam O Reilly, another rider, not shy of the Red Ribbons, collected another victory in the advanced intermediate class on the exceptionally consistent Couvre Valient for the host club, Carne. Team mate Fergus Whelan & Working Class Hero came in 4 penalties adrift for second place, with Liz Hickey and Finishing Touches from Tinahely just one penalty behind to take third. The SJ phase caused the penalties to clock up for a good few competitors in this grade after many did not make the time, accruing time penalties rather than jumping faults.
The intermediate was split into 2 sections, but it was the Carne riders that dominated both sections. Melanie Hammell & Taylor Maid took section A, 3 penalties in front of Perly Doyle and Shanco Lad from Ballycanew. In third and fourth respectively were the Carne club riders Assumpta Cullen & Killinick Chelsea and Kay Lambert with Keep Me Sweet. Section B was also a close-knit event, with another Carne duo, Aisling Quinn & Sky victorious for the host club and Kay Lambert and the evergreen Grange Bouncer hot on their heels for second spot.
The Green horse class was won by visiting Foxborough member Rita Holmes & Cassie, who posted a 3 penalty advantage over Judy Sweeney and T Jay Morgan, from Tinahely, who are going from strength to strength this year. This second place will earn Judy maximum league points for the Viking Series as out of region riders are ineligible for league points.
Another large section of riders is the advanced primary group. Neunna Farm's Fiona Dunne & Kelly Clover took the honours in Section A from Barbara Cullen and Tracey Rooney, from Carne, by only a one penalty margin, but it was enough to secure her the win.
Sarah Quinlan & Savannah Dancer and Mary Carter & Baunoge both from Warrington made it a club one two, with Sarah scoring a super dressage, and fast accurate clear rounds in both SJ and cross-country to secure the honours by 4 penalties. Again the time factor for the showjumping caught a number of riders out.
