New plan to determine future of Carlow town

Carlow town councillors are to mull over a comprehensive new plan earmarked to guide development in the town for the next six years, ahead of a special meeting next month.

Under the guidance of director of services Seamus O’Connor, the new draft Carlow Town Development Plan 2009 - 2015 has been prepared for the consideration of members of the town council.

Members had been due to discuss the draft plan at their October meeting last week, but due to the sheer volume of work involved in the key planning document, it was decided to arrange a special meeting on November 25.

Town clerk Joe Watters, described the draft development plan as a most important document which the councillors would be required to go through in considerable detail.

Cllr Michael Abbey acknowledged that a huge amount of work had gone into the preparation of the development plan.

“It is appropriate to hold off on this a bit longer, because this development plan will inform an awful lot of what will happen in this town over the next six years,” he said.

And he said that the recent experience of councillors having to go through the development plan for the town environs, had made members aware of the huge amount of work that still needed to be done by the town council, before the plan could be implemented.

And cathaoirleach, Cllr Tom O’Neill added, “this plan represents the future of Carlow for the next six years and we have to take the time and get it right.”

Councillors are set to debate any possible changes to the current draft plan at their meeting next month before sending the revised plan out for public consideration.
