A Carlow-based Garda received the Commissioner's medal for achieving the highest academic grades in her year at the passing out ceremony of 273 newly qualified gardaí held at the Garda College in Templemore, Co Tipperary on Monday last.
Garda Orla Ambrose, of Carlow town Garda station, was presented with the medal by the Minister for Justice, Dermot Ahern.
The Minister was on hand at the ceremony to present a number of awards including presenting three bronze medals, to members of An Garda Síochana. The gardaí received the awards for acts of bravery during which they put their lives at risk while tackling armed criminals.
Garda Patrick Kavanagh and Garda Stephen Foley, both of Store Street Garda station, were awarded the Scott’s medals for their actions during an incident while on patrol in 2002. Garda Charles Armstrong of Bridewell Garda station in Dublin's north inner city received the third bronze medal for bravery.
