Over 100 players took part in the recent junior open week. Players were drawn from many other clubs including Carlow, Naas, Waterford, Tramore, Wexford and Castleknock.
There was also a large French contingent who contributed greatly to the week. One of the French players made it to the final of the under-14 boys where he was defeated by Neal Rossiter from Wexford in a high quality match.
Local player Ronan O’Connor won the under-10 boys singles and Cliona Fennelly defeated a Wexford girl in the under-16 final. Carlow players did well this year winning under-16 and 18 boys singles and the girls under 18 singles. Waterford player Daragh Carroll won a good under-12 boys final. Naas player Katie Dore won under-10 girls singles on a wet Thursday afternoon.
Overall it was a good tournament held in reasonable weather conditions. Thanks should be extended to all persons involved in the organisation of the event.
Some of the local players played the prestigious Castleknock Open in Dublin with great success. Brian Reidy won the boys under-16 singles and Eoghan O’Connor lost a close three set match in the semi-final of the boys under-14 singles to the eventual winner of the event.
Young Eoin Mc Govern reached the final of the boys under 12 singles but lost to his great rival Bill Murray in the Lansdowne open.
