A local councillor has asked Carlow Town Council to consider planting more trees along the roadside in an effort to off-set carbon dioxide levels in the town.
Labour Cllr Jim Townsend suggested that the county manager get in his car and take a drive from the Eire Óg roundabout, through the Tullow Road roundabout and the Hacketstown Road roundabout to the Dublin Road roundabout so that he could view the shortage of trees along the roadside.
“Between Eire Óg and the Tullow Road there are no trees,” Cllr Townsend pointed out. “Between the Tullow Road and the Hacketstown Road there are a few trees but not enough in my opinion. And the Hacketstown Road to the Dublin Road is very bare.
“We fire away a lot of money but if we planted a lot of trees we would be doing something useful. We should set up a programme of tree planting and start there.”
Engineer Kieran Cullinane said any trees planted would have to be ‘fairly durable’ but said the council would consider the proposal.
